Sun and Sea 2 - Abalone, turquoise, pearl, and deer hide earrings

$60.00

White tail deer fur backed with braintanned deer hide, topped with red abalone buttons and edge beaded with faceted turquoise rounds, perfectly irregular pearls, and tiny 24K gold plated seed beads. They sway beneath two diamond-shaped creamy abalone beads.

The use of imperfect pearls is intentional. They honor Yaqui resistance and resilience. During the colonial pearl industry in the Sea of Cortés, Yaqui divers sometimes kept imperfect pearls to help provide for their families. What might have been considered less valuable became a means of caring for their families and asserting their own agency. Wearing these pearls is a small way of carrying that story forward. They are a reminder that resistance can be found in survival, in family, and in reclaiming what was taken.

The details:
These earrings are 3.75 inches (9.5cm) long.
They hang from 14K gold filled ear wires.
